HIGHLAND, Calif. (AP) — A 4-year-old boy playing with stuffed animals in his family's Southern California front yard was hit by gunfire and killed, authorities said Thursday.

Deputies found the injured boy Wednesday evening after responding to reports of gunfire in Highland, said Adam Cervantes, a San Bernardino County sheriff's deputy. Daniel Munoz was rushed to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Investigators are looking for a four-door, 1990s-model white Toyota Camry with black bumpers and want to speak with a passenger in the car as a person of interest, said Jodi Miller, a sheriff's spokeswoman.

Authorities have not named a suspect, said what the motive could be or if the boy was targeted.

Residents said they heard multiple gunshots in the city about 60 miles east of Los Angeles.

Daniel and his 5-year-old cousin were playing outside his grandmother's house at the time, Reina Isabel Hernandez, the boy's aunt, told The Sun newspaper. She said she saw the boy fall face-down after the shooting.

Daniel was carried back inside by his grandmother, who was crying, neighbor Luis Dominguez told the newspaper.
