WHITEFIELD, Maine (AP) — A Maine woman holding an essay contest to give away 47 acres of woodlands has abandoned the effort because she didn't get enough entries.
Martha Manchester of Edgecomb has owned the land in Whitefield since 1994. She tells the Kennebec Journal (http://bit.ly/1ezFj9e ) she'll refund the $100 entry fees.
The contest rules required entrants to pay $100 and submit an essay of no more than 200 words saying what they wanted to do with the land, assessed for more than $57,000.
Manchester initially said she wanted 3,000 entries but later upped that to 3,500. She didn't tell the newspaper how many entries she received.
The owner of the Center Lovell Inn recently gave away her business in a similar contest. State police say Janice Sage made more than $900,000 through her endeavor.
