RIVERDALE, Utah (AP) — Utah Division of Wildlife Resources officials are warning northern Utah residents of snapping-turtle sightings near the lower Weber River.
The Ogden Standard-Examiner reports that the invasive species was seen by two Riverdale residents in the past weeks. The reptiles can be dangerous because they sport sharp beaks, long claws and can be aggressive.
Utah DWR Norther Region spokesman Phil Douglass says residents around the area should be on alert for turtles along the river as well as ones that could wander into residential neighborhoods. He says they are easy to identify by their large size, sharp claws, jagged tails and hooked snouts.
People who see snapping turtles should not touch them and instead call Utah DWR.
