DETROIT (AP) — A Detroit high school principal and a nonprofit group leader have been arraigned in the theft of funds designed to help at-risk students.
Esperanza Detroit Chief Operating Officer Cecelia Zavala and Western International principal Rodolfo Benavides-Diaz were arraigned Wednesday on embezzlement and conspiracy charges.
The nonprofit provided services and in-house counselors to students at Western International and other Detroit Public Schools.
Prosecutors say more than $100,000 was embezzled from Esperanza between 2011 and 2014 for restaurants, vacations, a car and other personal uses. Another $10,000 was paid for consulting work that wasn't performed.
Hearings are scheduled July 8. Preliminary examinations will be held July 15.
Court documents did not list attorneys representing Zavala and Benavides-Diaz.
