HONOLULU (AP) — A Hawaii state lawmaker has a gash near his right eye and bruised ribs after being assaulted at a Honolulu homeless camp.

Democratic state Rep. Tom Brower told a news conference Tuesday he went to Kakaako after receiving an email about public safety and health concerns.

He says he took two pictures and put his camera away. He says a guy on a skateboard deliberately ran into him and punched him several times in the chest.

Rose Puu said her 14-year-old son was among the teens involved in the altercation but didn't hit the man. She said the youths didn't know who he was and were upset that he was filming their tents.

She says her son asked the man why he was shooting video but he didn't give a reason.
