HURRICANE, Utah (AP) — An experimental airplane crashed in a field in southern Utah on Saturday morning, seriously wounding the pilot.
Witnesses told police they say the plane take off from the airport in Hurricane and make two circles in the area before going down.
Police Sgt. Brandon Buell says it appears mechanical problems caused the plane's engine to stall.
The pilot was trying to land at the airport when the plane went down, hit a fence and traveled about 150 feet before stopping.
The 62-year-old pilot, who was flying alone, was rushed to a St. George hospital with serious injuries including a possible leg fracture.
His name wasn't immediately released.
Buell says the plane appeared to be totaled.
The cause of the 10:50 a.m. crash is under investigation by federal authorities.
