SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A Layton man is facing an aggravated murder charge in the death of his girlfriend's 2-year-old son, who police say was beaten over potty training.

Prosecutors say in court documents filed Friday that 34-year-old Joshua Schoenenberger acknowledged getting angry and stepping on the boy's stomach.

The child's mother, 23-year-old Jasmine Bridgeman, was charged with felony obstruction of justice.

Authorities say that 2-year-old James Siger Jr. was taken to a hospital earlier this month with internal blunt force injuries to his abdomen. Police say his mother and her boyfriend initially told investigators the child had been left alone in a bathtub and was found face down in the water, but there was no fluid in his airway.

The boy died May 11, two days after he was hospitalized.

No attorneys were listed for the couple Friday.
