MERIDIAN, Idaho (AP) — Officers with the Meridian Police Department are wearing body cameras.
Meridian Police Deputy Chief Tracy Basterrechea tells the Idaho Statesman (http://bit.ly/1KBdBXf ) in a story on Wednesday that the department began distributing them last month.
The cameras are attached to uniforms or glasses.
Basterrechea says about 25 officers are using the cameras now and all 73 uniformed officers are expected to have them by the end of the summer.
Basterrechea says officers are not legally required to notify a person they are being recorded.
The department plans to keep the recordings for a minimum of 210 days, and some may be kept for 100 years.
The cameras cost about $140, and the annual cost for data storage is about $45,000.
