TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — A new Board of Regents reports shows nearly half of Kansas students enrolled at higher learning institutions during the 2013-14 school year took at least one course from a distance.

Regents vice president of academic affairs Gary Alexander on Thursday presented the board with the report, which showed that distance education is widespread and growing at Kansas colleges, the Lawrence Journal-World (http://bit.ly/1R9VZmi ) reported.

"It's becoming a more strategic, more sophisticated process," he said. "Our schools know what they're doing, and they do it well... there is commitment to quality, not just slapping programs up and trying to benefit from that."

Board policy shows distance education, defined as faculty and students being "separated in place or time," offers instruction through another means, such as a video or audio recording.

The report that of the 252,408 students enrolled at Kansas colleges, 45.3 percent took at least one distance education course.

Kansas schools offered 491 distance education programs, representing 19.5 percent of all academic programs offered. It's a slight increase from 18.8 percent in the 2012-13 academic year. Community colleges offering the most at 305, representing 30.5 percent of their total programs.

The report shows the three most popular distance education programs statewide are liberal arts and sciences; administrative assistant and secretarial science; and child care and support services and management.
