BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — A student graduating with a doctorate degree from the University of Mary in Bismarck got a marriage proposal to go with her diploma as she walked across the stage to receive her academic hood.

During the school's commencement ceremony, Alexa Jesse Edman stood in awe while assistant football coach Chuck Miesbauer got down on one knee and opened a small box containing her engagement ring, the Bismarck Tribune (http://bit.ly/1KQUEgH ) reported. Her eyes widened and hand flew to her mouth in an expression of surprise as she said yes to his proposal.

"I was just on the stage and he was there," Edman said, adding that she never expected it, "not in a million years."

Miesbauer, 30, said he had the idea in his head for a couple months, and got approval for his plan from a university official. He wanted to share the moment with people who helped them get to where they are, he said.

"We have a ton of friends, family here. I want to acknowledge the people who played a role in this," Miesbauer said.

Edman, 24, got a doctorate degree in physical therapy after attending the University of Mary for six years. Miesbauer has coached football at the school for the past four years.

"There were classrooms she attended (for her classes), and they were on the same floor as my office," Miesbauer said. "So I'd see her all the time... A mutual friend introduced us, and our first date was a lunch date at Lucky Ducks."

The two have been together since December 2013.

"We go to the Y, exercise together, run, or sit around and watch The Office on Netflix," Miesbauer said of their relationship.

"My favorite part about her would have to be the way she makes me feel like a better person," he said.
