PHOENIX (AP) — Many kindergarten classrooms in Arizona are vulnerable to the spread of measles because so few students have been vaccinated.
The Arizona Republic reports (http://bit.ly/1Kh0E1r ) that data released in late April by the Arizona Department of Health Services shows that two of every five kindergarten classrooms in the state fell below herd immunity this school year.
That means that too few students in the group were immunized to prevent the spread of measles.
That's about the same rate as last year and comes from a data set that doesn't include the state's smallest schools.
The health department also looked at sixth-grade classrooms, where herd immunity has gone down. Last year, nearly on eight schools had sixth-grade classrooms vulnerable to the spread of measles. This year, it's one in six.
