DENVER (AP) — Agriculture and health officials are warning Denver-area pet owners to be on the lookout for skunks, which could create bigger problems than a foul-smelling pooch as rabies cases increase.
The Denver Post reports (http://dpo.st/1IxWFgq ) that six rabid skunks have been found in Arapahoe, Adams and Elbert counties this year, with three found in the past week. Residents are advised to make sure their pet's vaccinations are up to date, and to closely monitor any animals for signs of illness, especially livestock that may have been exposed.
Tri-County Health Department Executive Director John Douglas says that rabies was present in the eastern part of the counties and can easily spread from skunks to other mammals.
Officials in Weld County have confirmed five skunks were found infected with rabies since January.
