MCKEAN, Pa. (AP) — A science teacher at a northwestern Pennsylvania high school has waived his right to a preliminary hearing on charges he had sex with a 17-year-old female student at his home.
The Meadville Tribune (http://bit.ly/1NZzVr1 ) reports Thursday's waiver means 46-year-old Robert Schmidt, of McKean, must now either stand trial or enter a plea deal on the charges of corruption of minors and having sexual contact with a student. The girl is old enough to consent to sex in Pennsylvania, but that's still illegal because of the student-teacher relationship.
An attorney for the Penncrest School District refused to comment on the charges or about Schmidt's employment status.
Police say Schmidt taught at Cambridge Springs Junior/Senior High School when he invited the girl inside his home Dec. 5 and had sex with her.
Schmidt and his attorney didn't comment Thursday.
