SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Gov. Gary Herbert has approved a bill that will give in-state tuition to family members of public safety officers killed in the line of duty.

The Republican governor signed the measure Thursday.

It will allow the children of police officers or firefighters killed on the job to receive in-state tuition at institutions of higher education.

Herbert said in a statement that education is critical to the economic future of such children.

The measure would also provide tuition waivers to the officers' surviving spouses.
