FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) — Kentucky's largest health plan is offering free enrollment in the National Diabetes Prevention Program.
The program will be available to the nearly 300,000 members of the Kentucky Employees' Health Plan. The plan covers state and local government workers and retirees.
The program offers weekly classes led by a coach to help people monitor how much food they are eating, physical activity and weight loss. A pilot program at the King's Daughters Medical Center in Ashland saw participants lose an average of 23 pounds.
State officials say Kentucky has one of the highest rates of diabetes in the country. Department of Employee Insurance Commissioner Joe Cowles says at least 85,000 members of the state health plan have a high risk of developing Type 2 diabetes.
