LAS VEGAS (AP) — A Douglas County eighth-grader is heading to the National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C., after winning the annual state competition.

The Las Vegas Sun reports (http://bit.ly/1GTsDWx ) Daniel Taylor of Grace Christian Academy of Minden correctly spelled the word "boson" to come out on top of 34 other competitors Saturday at Bishop Gorman High School in Las Vegas.

Boson is a scientific word describing a particle that follows Bose-Einstein statistics.

Thousands of children across the state competed in local spelling bees to determine the 34 finalists.

The Greenspun Media Group sponsored the state contest.
