CONCORD, N.H. (AP) — The New Hampshire Senate has failed to pass a bill that would require employers to notify job candidates about what contraceptives the company's health insurance covers.
Senators tabled the bill after tying 12-12 on a vote for passage, meaning it could come back later. Senate Majority Leader Jeb Bradley of Wolfeboro and Sen. Nancy Stiles of Hampton were the only Republicans to support the bill. New Hampshire law requires employers to provide contraceptive coverage, but backers of the bill say the U.S. Supreme Court's decision in the Hobby Lobby case could allow employers to deny coverage for religious reasons.
Senators backing the bill say women deserve to know about coverage prior to taking a job, but opponents say the government shouldn't dictate what an employer must tell prospective employees.
