TRUMBULL, Conn. (AP) — A painting in Trumbull's library depicting Mother Teresa and Margaret Sanger, an early birth control advocate, is at the center of a free speech fight.
The Connecticut Post reports (http://bit.ly/1Gjej9J ) that First Selectman Tim Herbst last week ordered the painting removed.
He cited a copyright infringement claim by the Order of the Missionaries of Charity, an organization founded by Mother Teresa. He said he was surprised the library does not require artists to sign agreements holding the town harmless from potential issues with art displays.
The painting's owner, Richard Resnick, accused Herbst of infringing on his First Amendment rights. And his lawyer wants information on other art displays to make sure Resnick is not singled out.
Library director Susan Horton agreed it's a First Amendment issue but said she understands Herbst's decision
