PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Gov. Gina Raimondo says she'll nominate an assistant professor at Brown University and a consultant medical director at the state Department of Health to lead the health department.
Raimondo announced Tuesday she'll ask the Senate to confirm Dr. Nicole Alexander-Scott to serve as director. Current Director Dr. Michael Fine recently announced his resignation.
Alexander-Scott is an assistant professor of pediatrics and medicine at Brown's Warren Alpert Medical School. She serves in the divisions of pediatric and adult infectious diseases at the affiliated hospitals.
She is also a consultant medical director in the health department's infectious diseases and epidemiology division.
Secretary of Health and Human Services Elizabeth Roberts says Alexander-Scott was a tremendous asset during the recent meningitis outbreak at Providence College.
Alexander-Scott plans to begin serving as director April 1.
