RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — More than 35,000 customers are still without electric service after a winter storm that affected virtually all of North Carolina.

The storm prompted a number of schools across the state to cancel classes. Other school systems were starting 2 or 3 hours later than usual. A winter weather advisory remained in effect this morning for the mountains and central parts of the state because of black ice or freezing fog.

Some parts of the mountains in North Carolina had up to 8 inches of snow between late Wednesday and midday yesterday. Charlotte reported about 4 inches of snow. The National Weather Service in Raleigh reported about 3 inches.
