LAS VEGAS (AP) — A Las Vegas educator who worked with Fortune 500 companies for 13 years before switching courses and becoming an English teacher has been named Nevada's 2015 Teacher of the Year.

Top state education officials honored Ian Sulzman at a ceremony Friday at Spring Valley High School.

Sulzman graduated from the University of California, Irvine with a bachelor's degree in English. He worked in the private sector before getting a master's in teaching from Sierra Nevada College and pursuing certification through Nevada's Alternative Routes for Licensure program.

Sulzman teaches junior and seniors, and also works with the Model United Nations team.

The state's top teaching award is named in honor of Michael Landsberry, a math teacher who died in 2013 while trying to stop a student gunman at Sparks Middle School.
