PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — More than 150 teachers in five cities in Rhode Island are sharing nearly $148,000 grants to encourage innovation in urban school districts.
The Rhode Island Foundation is announcing the recipients Wednesday afternoon at Francis Varieur Elementary School in Pawtucket.
The foundation launched the Sparks Grants program last year with a $75,000 pilot program in Providence. It has been expanded this year to Central Falls, Newport, Pawtucket and Woonsocket.
The grant program, conceived by Providence philanthropists John and Letitia Carter, supports efforts to engage students through creative learning and unique experiences.
The Carters are expected to attend, along with Rhode Island Foundation CEO Neil Steinberg.
