CHICAGO (AP) — A former Northwestern University cancer research physician will pay nearly a half-million dollars to settle claims of federal research grant fraud.
In a news release, the FBI says Dr. Charles L. Bennett of Columbia, South Carolina, agreed to settle the lawsuit filed by the government but did not admit liability.
The $475,000 settlement comes a little more than a year after Northwestern agreed — also without admitting liability — to pay the United States $2.9 million to settle identical claims against the school.
In the lawsuit against Bennett, the government contended he submitted false claims under research grants from the National Institutes of Health.
The government alleged Bennett sought reimbursement for consulting services, hotels, travel and other expenses that benefited him, his family and friends from 2003 until 2010.
