GALESBURG, Ill. (AP) — The Knox County Housing Authority is battling bed bugs in one of its apartment buildings.

Derek Antoine is executive director of the housing authority. WGIL radio in Galesburg reports (http://bit.ly/1rJmBA6 ) Antoine on Tuesday told commissioners that 23 of 177 apartments in the city's Moon Towers have reported bed bugs this year alone.

Antoine says the reports have ranged from one bug in a room to an infestation.

Officials are considering preventive measures such as inspecting all furniture brought into public housing units. Antoine says incoming mattresses, couches and chairs often play host to the biting critters.

Affected rooms get three spray treatments over several weeks to eradicate the pests. Eight Moon Towers units still have problems.

Officials have thus far spent $8,200 fighting bed bugs.
