TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) — A woman is dead and a police officer has been seriously injured after she slammed into his patrol car, closing a major Phoenix-area freeway for hours and through the Wednesday morning commute.

The Arizona Department of Public Safety says a woman who reportedly had been driving erratically was fatally injured when her vehicle struck a parked DPS vehicle shortly after 3 a.m. MST.

The DPS says the officer, who was doing paperwork, and an observer inside the officer's vehicle were both seriously injured.

Identities weren't immediately released.

The Arizona Department of Transportation says the southbound Loop 101 freeway was closed for about six hours at the Loop 202 freeway before reopening late Wednesday morning.
