CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) — Nevada prison officials say a 69-year-old convicted child sex offender who died serving a 50-years-to-life prison sentence had a chronic medical condition.

The Nevada Department of Corrections released a statement Tuesday saying an autopsy will be conducted following the death of Russell Gates.

Gates died Monday at the department's regional medical center at the medium-security Northern Nevada Correctional Center in Carson City. The statement did not specify his medical ailment.

Records show that Gates was convicted after trial in Las Vegas in 2009 of two charges of sexual assault with a victim under 14, and eight counts of lewdness with a minor.

His sentencing in Clark County District Court was postponed several times in 2010 while he was hospitalized.

Gates arrived at state prison in April 2010.
