SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Police shot and killed a man outside a convenience store after he disobeyed officers' commands to stop outside the 7-Eleven in South Salt Lake, authorities said Tuesday.
Three Salt Lake City police officers were responding to a call about a man with a gun at about 7 p.m. Monday when Dillon Taylor was seen leaving the store. The officers confronted the 21-year-old, who was with two other men, said South Salt Lake Police Sgt. Darin Sweeten.
"He did not run. He was just visibly upset, did not comply," Sweeten said.
An officer fired, killing Taylor, according to a Salt Lake City police statement.
Salt Lake City Police Chief Chris Burbank said the confrontation "unfortunately resulted in an officer-involved shooting and an individual lost his life."
Sweeten declined to say whether Taylor attacked officers, or if he had a weapon. The three officers are on leave pending an investigation.
Officers interviewed the other two men and released them.
Utah court records show there was a warrant for Taylor's arrest for violating probation on an obstruction of justice charge. Taylor also pleaded guilty to being involved with two robberies on the same night in 2012. Taylor and a group of friends took $20 from a restaurant tip jar and a case of beer from a 7-Eleven, court records show.
