NAMPA, Idaho (AP) — Canyon County in southwest Idaho has suspended indefinitely its inmate labor detail program due to insufficient staffing.
Canyon County Sheriff Kieran Donahue tells the Idaho Press-Tribune (http://bit.ly/Xk6wEN ) in a story on Thursday that 23 employees in July left for other positions, and 18 of those were detention officers at the Canyon County Jail.
He says he had to transfer the labor detail officers to the jail to maintain the federally mandated number of detention officers.
The labor detail allows non-violent offenders to perform manual labor rather than being put in jail.
