ALBANY, Ga. (AP) — Jury selection will move into a third day in the federal trial of three people charged in a deadly salmonella outbreak traced to a southwest Georgia peanut plant.
Dozens of potential jurors filled an Albany courtroom Tuesday as they were called one-at-a-time into the judge's chambers to answer questions about what they already know about the case. The judge dismissed 14 potential jurors Tuesday evening. Jury selection started Monday and will continue Wednesday.
Former Peanut Corporation of America owner Stewart Parnell, his brother and food broker, Michael Parnell, and the peanut plant's quality control manager, Mary Wilkerson, are charged with shipping tainted peanuts and covering up lab results showing the nuts tested positive for salmonella.
Nine people died and more than 700 were sickened in the outbreak five years ago.
