SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) — A tweet on New Mexico Education Secretary Hanna Skandera's account is drawing scrutiny for a misspelling.
KOAT-TV reports (http://goo.gl/3Uhrkg) that Skandera tweeted Thursday: "Proud to see the NM School grading website has recieved (sic) nearly 40,000 hits since 10am today!"
That misspelling of "receive" sparked a reaction from critic and Albuquerque school board member Kathy Korte. She responded on social media that students in New Mexico learn "I before E except after C."
Larry Behrens, Skandera's media representative, said he sent out the tweet, which has since been deleted. He says critics were focusing too much on one misspelled word and ignoring recent good news about schools' grades.
State officials said this week a majority of New Mexico's public schools improved or maintained their letter grade reflecting performance this year.
