A cold frontal boundary will extend across the East Coast on Tuesday, while a separate cold front will move over the Pacific Northwest.
An area of low pressure is expected to deepen on Tuesday as it treks north northeastward over the Great Lakes. This system will usher showers and thunderstorms across the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast. Cold air will move in behind this system, as temperatures are expected to drop 5 to 10 degrees over the northern Plains and the upper Midwest. Meanwhile, a cold frontal boundary associated with this low pressure system will extend from New England to Florida. An onshore flow from the Gulf of Mexico will fuel showers and thunderstorms, which are forecast to extend across the eastern Gulf Coast, the Southeast and the Mid-Atlantic. These thunderstorms will produce heavy rain, which could lead to flash flooding over a handful of states. Just to the west, much weaker showers and thunderstorms will push across the southern Plains, the Mississippi Valley and the central Gulf Coast.
A separate cold front is forecast to shift across the northwestern corner of the country. This system will bring rainy weather to Washington and Oregon, while a mixture of rain and snow will move across the Cascades and the northern Rockies. High pressure will keep conditions clear across the Great Basin and the Southwest. Temperatures are expected to approach the triple digits in the California and Arizona deserts on Tuesday.
Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Monday have ranged from a morning low of 3 degrees at Yellowstone, Wyo. to a high of 91 degrees at Ft Pierce, Fla.
