NEWARK, N.J. (AP) - The Star-Ledger of Newark has reached a tentative agreement with its production unions, heading off a threatened shutdown of New Jersey's largest newspaper.
The newspaper reports (bit.ly/15yRUEn) that officials on both sides say compromises have been made. No details were released.
Publisher Richard Vezza says savings were needed to "warrant continued publication" of the Star-Ledger. He'd threatened a shutdown at the end of 2013 if an agreement wasn't reached by Friday.
Council of Star-Ledger Unions President Ed Shown says the deal came after two days of nonstop talks and includes buyouts, wage freezes and other concessions. He says the unions maintained some "quality of life" issues.
Unions representing pressmen, machinists, engravers and mailers are expected to meet next week to seek ratification of the new four-year contracts by their members.
