(AP) - Stocks mostly rose on Friday, adding to the February's strong gains. Investors were encouraged by news that manufacturing expanded in the Midwest this month at a faster pace than economists were expecting.

On Friday:

The Dow Jones industrial average rose 49.06 points, or 0.3 percent, to 16,321.71.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index rose 5.16 points, or 0.3 percent, to 1,859.45.

The Nasdaq composite fell 10.81 points, or 0.3 percent, to 4,308.12.

For the week:

The Dow is up 218.41 points, or 1.4 percent.

The S&P 500 is up 23.20 points, or 1.3 percent.

The Nasdaq has gained 44.71 points, or 1.1 percent.

For the year so far:

The Dow is down 254.95 points, or 1.5 percent.

The S&P 500 is up 11.09 points, or 0.6 percent.

The Nasdaq is up 131.53 points, or 3.2 percent.
