INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Spotty showers Sunday did not prevent the Indiana State Fair from topping a total attendance of 900,000 with admissions on its final day, a fair spokesman said.

This year's 17-day run is expected to go down in the books as one of the five most attended ever, spokesman Andy Klotz told WISH-TV (http://bit.ly/XsRkFC ).

"The temperatures are a lot more important than a little bit of rain here and there," Klotz said. "As long as we don't get an all-day washout, then we expect to have good attendance and that's what we've had this year."

Final attendance figures are expected to be released Monday. Cool and dry weather helped last year's fair set an attendance record of more than 978,000 people.

This year's fair featured the return of beer and wine after a nearly 70-year absence. The Indiana Beer and Wine Exhibition was open for eight hours each day, allowing Hoosier breweries and wineries to sell some of their craft beers and wines.

"The vendors that participated this year were really thrilled with how it went, and I'm guessing that word's going to get out to some of the other vendors," Klotz said.

A state law that took effect in July opened the door to the first beer and wine sales at the fair since 1946.
