SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Salt Lake County Mayor Ben McAdams and Utah Lt. Gov. Spencer Cox will square off in a demolition derby Saturday night. McAdams, a Democrat, challenged Cox, a Republican, to the car smashing event at the Salt Lake County Fair. McAdams told The Salt Lake Tribune that he and Cox are both trying to raise money for charity.

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Longtime state legislator John Valentine is leaving the senate to become chair of the Utah state tax commission. Gov. Gary Herbert chose Valentine to replace Bruce Johnson, citing Valentine's experience as an advocate for sound tax policy during his 26 years in the state legislature. Valentine is a tax attorney in a Provo law firm.

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Utah's largest public teachers' union is naming a new leader. The Utah Education Association appointed Lisa Nentl-Bloom as its executive director yesterday. She is an organizational specialist for the National Education Association. She replaces Mark Mickelsen, who retired after six years in the position.

CEDAR CITY, Utah (AP) — Moreno Hofland announced his return from a serious injury by using a textbook lead-out from his Belkin teammates to win the opening stage of the Tour of Utah yesterday. The 113.5-mile stage to open the 10th edition of the Tour of Utah took riders through the Parowan Gap and Cedar Breaks National Monument before returning to Cedar City.
