NEZPERCE, Idaho (AP) — The Bureau of Indian Affairs has ordered the northern Idaho city of Kamiah to vacate a 4.6-acre section of land the bureau says is owned by the Nez Perce Tribe.
The Lewiston Tribune reports (http://bit.ly/1nteEHX) in a story on Tuesday that the land is currently occupied by the city dog pound and a concrete production plant that has a lease from the city.
Kamiah Mayor Dale Schneider says the city has owned the land for years after acquiring it in a land swap with Empire Lumber Co. of Kamiah.
The bureau says a railroad originally had an easement to build a depot but never did, and deeded the land to the lumber company.
But officials say the land should have reverted to the tribe and current leases aren't valid.
