NEWARK, Del. (AP) — The U.S. Department of Energy has awarded the University of Delaware a $12 million federal grant to develop renewable energy.
The grant announced Monday by Delaware's congressional delegation will fund the university's Catalysis Center for Energy Innovation. It's intended to accelerate scientific breakthroughs for 21st century energy needs.
Professor Dionisios Vlachos says the four-year grant will allow researchers to work on technologies that can transform plant biomass into renewable chemicals and fuels.
The University of Delaware is one of 32 energy research centers nationwide that are sharing $100 million in such grants. Awards range from $2 million to $4 million per year.
