ELKO, Nev. (AP) — Federal mine safety regulators say an experienced worker who was killed in an accident at a gold mine in Elko County apparently got his clothing entangled in equipment while drilling rock underground.
The U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration identified the victim of the April 28 accident as 53-year-old Richard C. Otto.
The Elko Daily Free Press reports (http://tinyurl.com/nzz3df8) that MSHA's preliminary investigation issued Tuesday found that Otto was operating a jackleg drill when his clothes got caught in the machinery at Klondex's Midas Mine about 90 miles northwest of Elko.
Another miner found him unresponsive at about 11:30 a.m.
MSHA says Otto had 32 years of experience in the mining industry and had worked at Midas for 11 years.
Klondex bought the mine from Newmont Mining Corp. in February.
