SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A Spanish Fork lawmaker hopes to amend a law regulating car dealerships that some cities say amounts to protectionism.
The Deseret News (http://bit.ly/1wEc5Pb) reports that a bill introduced Republican Rep. Mike McKell is scheduled for a hearing on Monday. It would alter a 1991 law that requires potential new dealerships to be reviewed by a committee of competing businesses if the proposed location is in the same county as or within 15 miles of a dealership of the same brand.
McKell's proposal would decrease the radius to 10 miles.
West Jordan Mayor Kim Rolfe said that compromise won't help his city and would like to see the radius reduced to 5 miles with no approval required.
Car dealers aren't willing to disclose their financial information to a panel of rivals, Rolfe said.
