MIAMI (AP) — A 24-year-old woman from Las Vegas is the runner-up in this year's Miss Universe pageant. Miss USA Nia Sanchez came in just behind Miss Colombia, Paulina Vega. Real estate mogul and reality TV star Donald Trump, who owns the pageant, said many predicted Vega would take the crown a few weeks ago when contestants first arrived in Miami for the festivities.

RENO, Nev. (AP) — Republican Gov. Brian Sandoval is throwing down a challenge to lawmakers from his own party who oppose his proposed budget: come up with a better plan to help the state and its struggling education system. Sandoval told the Reno Gazette-Journal that anti-tax lawmakers need to devise their own plan and spell out specific budget cuts they will make.

ELKO, Nev. (AP) — Nevada wildlife officials are suggested that a bigger share of the money hunters pay for Nevada elk tags go to compensate ranchers and others for property damage caused by elk herds. The Nevada Department of Wildlife is sponsoring a bill in the upcoming Legislature that would give state wildlife commissioners additional flexibility to allocate more money for elk mitigation projects, including fence repair.

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Opponents of a $200 million soccer stadium in downtown Las Vegas have turned in about 8,400 signatures in support of a ballot initiative blocking public funding for the project. The Las Vegas Sun reports opponents turned in the signatures late Friday in hopes of securing a June vote on public funding for the stadium.
