RENO, Nev. (AP) — A Nevada Republican is trying to unseat an incumbent Democratic assemblyman in a blue-collar district in Sparks to become the first openly transgender person to serve in a state legislature. Lauren Scott admits many people thought her candidacy was a "bit of a joke." But the 50-year-old businesswoman says voters are learning there's more to her platform than just civil rights. Scott founded a company that manufactures semiconductor equipment and won an Air Force Commendation Medal during Operation Desert Storm.

LAS VEGAS (AP) — A Henderson police officer is accused of having a blood-alcohol level more than twice the legal limit when he was arrested driving a pickup truck the wrong way on a northwest Las Vegas freeway. Joseph Lawrance also is accused of having a bottle of whiskey, prescription pills, a loaded gun and another person with him when he was stopped in a Toyota Tundra a little before 1 a.m. Oct. 23 on U.S. 95.

LAS VEGAS (AP) — MGM Resorts International says it earned less from its table games in the third quarter, compounding losses it expected as it re-opened the Delano at Mandalay Bay and spruced up the area leading up to the Monte Carlo. MGM reported a quarterly loss of $20.3 million, or 4 cents per share.

LAS VEGAS (AP) — A grand jury in Las Vegas has indicted a 73-year-old man on six felony charges in a shooting that left a hearing advocate wounded in a Las Vegas office building housing a Nevada agency that handles disabled worker claims. The attempted murder, assault, battery, firearm and weapon charges lodged Wednesday against Leonard Paul Sullivan could put him in prison for the rest of his life. Authorities say the shooting apparently stemmed from an 11-year compensation case.
