ROME, Ga. (AP) — State School Superintendent John Barge says he is applying for a position as superintendent of Rome City Schools in northwest Georgia.
Barge ran unsuccessfully for the Republican gubernatorial nomination last spring against Gov. Nathan Deal.
The Rome News-Tribune reports (http://bitly.com/1DbU6wq) that Barge on Friday toured Rome Middle School.
He told the newspaper that he applied for the district's open superintendent position, but that he has "not heard from them."
On Oct. 7, Utah officials announced that Barge was among four finalists vying to become Utah's state schools superintendent. Another candidate, Brad Smith, was hired for the Utah job.
Rome school board chairwoman Cheryl Huffman said the board is protecting the anonymity of its 23 applicants.
The Rome system has several elementary schools that feed into Rome Middle School and Rome High School.
