CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) — State officials say Nevada's unemployment rate declined last month to its lowest level in six years. The Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation says that Nevada's jobless rate was 7.6 percent in August, down from 7.7 percent in July. State economist Bill Anderson says construction employment led the growth with nearly 13 percent more jobs this August than a year before.
DENVER (AP) — Educators say a surprising number of school science teachers don't have the required training to handle hazardous chemicals and don't know about standard safety measures. Fires have erupted twice in 12 days during science demonstrations in Nevada and Colorado, injuring a total of 17 people. Both involved methanol, a form of alcohol. Both are under investigation.
LAS VEGAS (AP) — State transportation officials have lifted restrictions on commercial trucks on Interstate 15 near Moapa. The freeway had two northbound and one southbound lane open as repairs continue to flood-damaged pavement about 50 miles northeast of Las Vegas. A second southbound lane could be open by the weekend.
NORTH LAS VEGAS, Nev. (AP) — Authorities say they've arrested a 44-year-old woman in the shooting death of a 52-year-old woman who was found dead in her North Las Vegas apartment. Police say they arrested Christine Sanchez on suspicion of murder and robbery after Bonnie Rice's body was found on Saturday.
