SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- Sen. Chris Buttars says he won't continue to push legislation this session that would have created an accelerated early graduation option for some Utah high school students.

But the West Jordan Republican says he plans to bring revamped legislation back in 2011. He also wants to put the issue through an interim study this summer and give lawmakers time to digest his proposals.

Buttars said Monday accelerated graduation -- letting some students skip 12th grade if they've earned their credits -- is the future of public education.

He said his proposal was to let students who wanted to graduate early so they could begin college sooner or get started in a skilled trade.
