(KSL Team Coverage/AP) The body of a Norwegian man who disappeared while backcountry skiing in Big Cottonwood Canyon has been found.
The Utah Avalanche Center confirms the body of 37-year-old Vegard Lund was found this morning after a helicopter dropped explosives in the area to clear snow and create a safe route for rescuers. Officers say Lund apparently died in an avalanche.
Deputies say the man from Tromso, Norway, was skiing yesterday with two other Norwegians when they became separated. His friends later called authorities.
The skier had a search beacon, which helped crews to find the skier's location, but they had difficulty recovering the body due to the difficult conditions in very rugged terrain.
The search began last night, but it was called off around midnight because weather has been a problem. The two big issues they've been dealing with up here are the avalanche danger and the wind.
Lund is the fourth avalanche death in Utah in less than a week.
