SEATTLE -- The Weber State Wildcats were hoping to make it rain in Seattle against the Redhawks of Seattle University Sunday. Unfortunately, the Redhawks took flight and won the game 91-87.
In their first two games this season the Wildcats have struggled to put the ball in the basket, but against Seattle the Wildcats finally started to find success.
Against the Redhawks, Weber State was able to shoot just over 50 percent for the game, 36 percent from behind the 3-point line.
"Once we handled their pressure and made good decisions than we got good shots," said Rahe, singling out junior college transfer Lindsey Hughey, who scored 12 points on 6 of 8 shooting and had four steals. "Lindsey is starting to get comfortable. [He] is going to be a very good player for us." Kyle Bullinger scored 22 and Steve Panos 21 to lead Weber State (0-3). Damian Lillard added 18 points.
On the other side, Charles Garcia dominated for the Redhawks with 27 points, 11 from the free throw line, and 11 rebounds.
"He's a great player and creates a difficult match up for us on our defensive end," said Rahe. "We had to play some zone to handle the big kid, he's hard to handle one on one."
That forced the Wildcats to play a zone defense, but that just opened up the floor for other Seattle players, four of which scored in double figures.
Aaron Broussard added 17 points and Cervante Burrell had 15 for Seattle (2-2), which won its second consecutive game.
Mike Boxley and Chris Gweth each had 10 points for the Redhawks, who are playing their first full Division I schedule since 1980. Broussard hit three 3-pointers in the second half to help Seattle build an 18-point lead.
"We just couldn't get them stopped," said Rahe. "That's a good basketball team."
A late rally by the Wildcats came up short. After the Redhawks ran off 12 straight points to lead 82-64, Weber State cut the lead to 90-87 with 27 seconds left. Lillard had nine points and Bullinger eight during the 21-6 run.
The Wildcats got within three points in the closing seconds, but were simply unable to contain Garcia who hit some clutch baskets and free throws down the stretch.
"We are going to find out what team we have, but we are not going to find out what kind of team we have without adversity," said Rahe. "We just got to keep our heads up, stay together and stay positive and this team will do that."
The Wildcats will look to rebound at home on Tuesday against Western State.
Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
