DUI suspect tasered, taken to jail
November 7th, 2009 @ 11:23am

UTAH COUNTY -- Troopers used a Taser on a man they arrested for DUI along Interstate 15 in Utah County on Friday.

The Utah Highway Patrol said it happened in the southbound lanes around milepost 271. A trooper handcuffed the suspect and put him in the back of a patrol car. The suspect slipped his handcuffs from rear to front, tried to open the car door and began kicking the inside of the car while it was en route to jail.

The trooper stopped, and another trooper arrived to assist. When they opened the door to readjust the suspect's handcuffs, the man kicked one of the officers.

UHP said one trooper deployed a Taser and did a dry-tasing on the man.

Troopers said the suspect then appeared to be unconscious, but his vital signs were normal. As medical help was arriving, the man sat up. He was checked for medical problems, then taken to the Utah County Jail.

A "dry stun" has been described previously as no darts being fired, but the suspect being shocked when the Taser is placed against the skin.
