@Spike - Wouldn't recommend it. A home in Tooele was in the same bust, it seems.... 16 tubs of mushrooms, 30 pot plants, hydroponics equipment... 'shrooms valued at about $20k.
So, wouldn't waste your time heading over to Tooele, either.

@Tina H. - shouldn't call kettles black. From someone even older and wiser and w/ plenty of experience - the worst effects of pot come from the inhalation of smoke. As a drug, it's pretty harmless. You're average over-the-counter cold medicine or analgesic has more negative and potentially dangerous side effects.
@Olivia M. - According to the US Government, the lethal dose of marijuana is either about one-third your body weight, consumed all at once. So, I'd have to smoke 66 pounds of weed in one sitting to die. Olivia, if you want to see lives saved...lets get rid of alcohol.
@Holden Green A. - If you want to save lives, don't worry about the marijuana. Ban cigarettes, wreckless drivers, and even heroin, maybe even ban cancer, diabetes, Congestive Heart Failure. I have never heard of one dying from an overdose of marijuana.
Thank God they got that dangerous drug off the streets. Who knows how many people would of died from this dangerous, killing, drug. I'm so glad they are taking the money, and time away from finding meth dealers. Because Marijuana is the real killer.
now, all you people who are complaining when you get pulled over that officers aren't out catching "real" criminals have nothing to complian about. Way to go Sandy PD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Sandy's finest saves the day! pfft legalize (or at least decriminalize it) tax the "heck" out of it and put the money into UT pathetic school systems...truly a sad day
So will the "snitch" that dropped a dime on this be forever glorified in a celestial realm?
Sandy's finest saved the day...pftt!
We need to legalize or at least decriminalize & tax the "heck" out of it and put the money into our very sad and pathetic UT school systems.
bad news
@Safetyfirst - By getting involved with the police, I shut down a drug dealer on my street last year. Want to know why?
1. Its illegal.
2. Crime always increases where drugs are bought and sold.
3. I have kids and don’t want them in an environment where the scum of the universe is driving by every 5 minutes to buy junk.
4. It depreciates the value of homes in the neighborhood.
5. I don’t like suspicious/unstable neighbors.
6. I was tired of the domestic abuse coming from the house. Yes drugs addiction almost always = domestic abuse.
7. I was tired of their trash (porn) littering the neighborhood. Yes drug addiction almost always = porn addiction/collection. In their case, porn addiction lead to child and spouse abuse.
To all you druggies out there: If you bring your filth into my neighborhood I will shut you down. DO NOT MESS WITH THIS PAPA BEAR!!
@John smallberries - What's with you and your lists? Let me tell you something pal, smoking pot does not lead to domestic abuse or porn, where do come up with all this stuff. If domestic abuse and porn is littering your neighborhood I would get [no swearing please] out of there because there's way more going on there than just pot being dealt. Besides hippies don't litter.
@Luna - I didn’t say pot leads to porn. I said that drug addictions and porn addictions often go hand in hand. In my drug dealer neighbor’s case, he was a Meth dealer. For 12 years he was a pretty good guy until he got into drugs. Then the spouse abuse and child abuse started happening. He ended up loosing his kids, job(s) and house.
I worked very closely with the police for over almost 1 year before they busted his door down. I got my ‘anecdotal evidence’ from the SL county police department. They said, “Almost always when they make a drug bust at someone’s home, they find lots of porn lying around”.
I would be very interested in seeing some actual numerical statistics on the subject of drug addiction/porn addiction cases. After all, carnal sins love the company of other carnal sins.
@John smallberries - Porn is not illegal. Not all drug addicts are into porn and not all porn addicts are into drugs. You shouldn't pre-judge so fast.
Meth has the ability to change a persons whole, from decent people to criminals. I have seen that first hand. I myself have and never will do meth, but I have seen friends lose it all. But marijuana, the effects of marijuana are not comparable to that of meth.
I give props to you for doing what you did. Meth ruins alot of people. But there is a BIG difference between meth and pot.
@Viva la migra - I'm curious too where in the world they came up with their figures on the value and yield of each plant. It also depends on if they are mature enough to even harvest! Jeez. If they yanked those babies before they budded, they're not worth much at all.
Someone's not wise with the going price;) They must be dreaming...or maybe they burned it before reporting about the bust and stood too close.
@Viva la migra - What street does the State sell their caputure on to get those prices and who heck is buying at that price?
I want an street address cause I am might just have to open a SUPER POT-MART!! :-)
@John C. - John, I think we're generally on the same page. I was stating by my comment that both Sandy and West Valley City are awful places with lots and lots of bad bad people.
Other than that, it's probably best that you just accept that I do speak for you. Like the blowing of the wind. It just is what it is.
Marijuana kills paychecks, because it costs to much. They should legalize pot and go after a drug that actually hurts society, meth. The DEA spent the majority of their funds battling a plant that grows naturally in the ground from seed and spent much less on battling meth.
All of the folks that post ads supporting law enforcment for upholding the law get slammed with negative votes and those that think this is funny get positive votes. Do we really have THAT many potheads in this area? And if so, why are they wasting their time reading when there is so much weed to smoke and Doritios to eat?
Come on people. Pot may not be as bad as meth, but it IS a gateway drug that leads to things like meth and worse. I know people in prison either because of pot or because their pot use led to bigger and worse crimes. You will NEVER convince me that pot is innocent or harmless. I've seen to many personal examples of wasted lives that started with pot. IMHO the less there is the better!!!!
@Aceohearts - One could argue this, however, the same could be said of cigarettes, alcohol, and even caffeine. Anything that enhances a person's emotions or well being can be said to be a gateway drug -- by making that person look for something else to give a bigger and better enhancement -- so I don't accept that opinion. And, no, I don't smoke weed, so not everyone who supports its use is a pothead.
@ender2155 - You are absolutely right on the money with your remark. Good for you that you brought up other stimulants, etc.
If I could, I'd DITTO you 100 times!!! (And, no I'm not on anything either). I just get tired of people saying what a horrible drug is it. My husband used marinol for his nausea resulting from chemo. Marinol is chemically derived from the plant and made by a pharmaceutical company. We bought it at the pharmacy. It worked better than the pills we had to pay $55 dollars a piece for that he needed to take up to 4 times a day! The marinol was a much cheaper and didn't come with side effects that scared you have out of your wits.
@Aceohearts - This is coming from someone who probably never even tried POT before. Unless you tried it then you shouldn't say anything at all. I use to smoke years ago when I was in High School and i NEVER had the urge to try bigger and better things. I don't smoke anymore and I don't have the urge to even attempt to smoke it again. I think I have a better time eating my Doritos. But from my years of experience with the drug, I do feel that it is more HARMLESS than alcohol and cigarettes.
@Adam M. - So by your logic you don’t know anything unless you tired it first.
You should try contracting AIDS. Then you could share your opinion about it. Suicide is another one.
@John smallberries - Your going way out of the picture. Contracting AIDS is a little more serious than someone talking about smoking pot. I won't even get into suicide.
@Adam M. - Re-reading my post it did come off a wee bit hateful. That was not my intention. My apologies.
My point which I did not succeeding in making was that you don’t always have to try something in order to make a good decision about it.
@John smallberries - I am not impressed (positively) with you. At least on the level of being a Human.
Those posts have valid points, and you just say trash to what? Pick a fight? Hurt feelings?
@Adam M. - ....I've never even tried pot. I do smoke tobacco, and I even (gasp) enjoy an occasional beer. But guess what? Under current laws those are legal, whereas pot is not. Does that make them better? Maybe not, but it does make me better because I'm not breaking the law. If you don't like the law, work to change it, otherwise be prepared to pay the price for breaking it.
And if you still think pot is "harmless" talk to my uncle. He started with pot. He owned his own company and lost it because he couldn't manage to get to work often enough to fill his contracts. Then he "graduated" to meth. Then the non-drug related crimes started because he needed to support his habits. Now he's doing 6 years in a federal pen. Nicest guy in the world. Do I love him? Yeah he's my uncle. Do I support his thoughts and actions? Not in the slightest. He got himself where he is today by his own choices.
Exactly where do they get their prices at? $4000 per plant is crazy, hell I'd sell to the cops if I could get those kind of prices! It's like when you see the crazy prices on the news where they bust a coke or meth dealer with an ounce or so and say it has a street value of $2800 or more. Who sells an ounce in quarter grams for $25 each. Large volume at low prices to the public, THAT'S how to make the money!
Ok, so we have 130 plants of this "dangerous drug" off the streets, awesome job to have confiscated a harmless substance that has little to no detrimental effects on the people who use it. Cannabis grows naturally throughout the world and is used safely and legally in many modern societies. It is not physically addictive (as is tobacco and alcohol, which are legal, just taxed) and does no lasting harm to the body (aside from smoking it, but I already covered the legal "weed" that people smoke). The government needs to take a note from Canada and other countries and place restrictions on pot (such as age restrictions and penalties for driving under the influence), tax it, and focus on abused substances that do claim lives and cause an increase in crime -- meth, coke, heroin, etc. So congratulations to Sandy Police for saving us from Reefer Madness and keeping all the raving potheads at bay.
Oh yeah, P.S. -- I don't even smoke pot, so don't think this is some rant by some stoner who is annoyed he can't get his weed; the facts I quoted we were tested on in med school!
Sounds like someone at the Sandy P.D. is fudging the real numbers and street value JUST a teensy bit.
While 130 plus/minus one or two plants may seem like a lot, it's in reality a small family farm.(it's a small farming operation with small time results, how much cash did they recover? Not much I bet) Seems that Sandy PD is taking notes from the FBI to try and get better press time, by bumping the street values up. IF it really is $4000.00 per plant, than there should be precious little grass/pot in Utah.(we KNOW that's not true) As a former law enforcement officer(32 years in California) with loads of marijuana cultivation busts, this is a teensy one, nothing more, and I think the numbers are being fudged to make someone's career look good. Sounds sensational, but it's.....YAWN....not.
you know aceohearts, well educated people and successful people can smoke too. It is all about responsibility, marijuana is a laughing joking subject because thats all it does to you. So dont get jealous that we can smoke and still lead a life of productivity, success, and raise disciplined intelligent kids. Its all about putting first things first (Stephen R.Covey)
@try harder - My brother thought pot made him smarter. He told me he always balances his checkbook while high. Guess what? The genius went bankrupt and lost his house. He was doing fine until he started smoking.
No wonder the stereotype of smoking pot and Bevis/Butthead is so prevalent. It is right on the money. Smoke pot = drain-brammage.
Can anyone tell me where the first bad decision is?
1. Total Freedom
2. Choose to smoke pot
3. Get dumber
4. Too dumb to get a job/can’t keep a job
5. Resort to crime
6. Jail/death.
Can anyone tell me what was the first bad decision was?
@John smallberries - You should of put reading your comments on the list. Smoking pot does not make you dumber, and if your too dumb to get a job it's not from smoking. Some of the most intelligent people I know smoke, and I don't remember beavis and butthead ever smoking, I think they ate mushrooms one time though.
@Luna - If you had to go into surgery, would you care if the surgeon and all the nurses smoked pot? How about if you were falsely accused of a crime, would you care if your lawyer smoked pot?
I know several pot heads that think other pot heads are smart. I don’t smoke pot and I don’t know a single smart pothead.
@John smallberries - Im smart so I guess you cant use that piss poor excuse.
Just because you have had a blindfold over your eyes your whole life doesnt mean you should be looking out for people who like to use a plant for recreation.
@Luna - SHORT TERM EFFECTS of marijuana use include impaired short-term memory, impaired concentration, attention, and judgment; impaired coordination and balance, increased heart rate, blood shot or red eyes, dry mouth and increased appetite (the "munchies").
* Occasional effects, especially with long term use, include anxiety, panic, and paranoia.
LONG TERM EFFECTS of marijuana use include addiction (psychological), paranoia, persistent anxiety, impaired learning skills and memory difficulties.
MEDICAL COMPLICATIONS associated with marijuana use include an increased risk of chronic cough, bronchitis, and emphysema; increased risk of cancer of the head, neck, and lungs; a decrease in testosterone levels and lower sperm counts for men and an increase in testosterone levels for women and increased risk of infertility.
@John smallberries - Also, I smoked pot for 10 years.......even drove while high.......not one ticket or accident. I also just graduated from a four year university. I must be a total retard because of pot. Maybe your brother had some bad genetics. People are stupid for lots of reasons.
What I find interesting is that here we are in ultra conservative Utah and this pot bust is going to lead the news, and nobody seems to care. Almost everyone is joking about it, at least on this site. What does this tell you about how serious this issue is, even in Utah. I'm glad to be reading some of these things and know that this community realizes which drugs are causing the most problems.
you narrow minded utahns listen up. Meth is a killer. Marijuana is not. Meth almost killed me on many occasions. Marijuana made me love everyone. Marijuana is a big reason I can even cope in this twisted sick world. Legalize it to help recovering meth addicts settle down. Please leave maryjane alone and focus on the real killer METH....
I bet you play a lot of solitare. If you took 1000 people,I'd say 5 would agree with you. I also bet you have a copy of "REEFER MADNESS" that you watch at least once a year. Your wrong, wrong, wrong!!
@Making C. - They probably voted it funny because they 'are' on pot. Pot affects people's judgment. It makes them dumber. They don't know any better.
Did you cousin die? I hope he/she is OK. Pot also doubles the heart rate and can trigger other problems like heart attack. The increased paranoia is brings also triggers other complications.
For anyone wanting to learn about illegal drugs without trying them out personally, goto www.streetdrugs.org.
Learning about drugs by secondhand experience is the only way to learn without surrendering more important priorities. Learning about drugs first hand will usually result in addiction to that drug and mass surrender of your freedoms and successes in life.
Take suicide. It is much better to read about it that to experience it firsthand. You may not have as good an understanding of it but you won't be dead either.
They had to be "told" where it was. If it weren't for the neighbor who told the police where the house was the cops wouold still be pulling people for 5mph over the speed limit on 20th East.
When it comes to drugs Sandy Cops couldn't catch a cold.
Based on a recent event where a drug runner from Mexico got granted immunity in exchange to testifying against two border patrol agents, the drug dealers here should also be given immunity so that the police can be prosecuted. I bet Mr. Bush would love that.
I was informed that the Sandy and Tooele Police Department are holding an auction for all the "Evidence" confiscated on February 3, 2007. So I guess they don't burn it after all!!
I find it almost hilarious that alcohol is legal while marijuana is illegal. I'd rather have stoned friends than drunk friends! Drunk friends are unpredictable while stoned friends are laid back and
"chill."
street value per plant is 4k? Ummm Ive never heard of plants being sold on the street... just the product.. and that guess-timate, of course, is likely inflated and based on a cumulative estimate. So this "potential amount" is being held against the grower.. I mean, there's a big difference between the chronic and the dirt weed (in both price and quality).... besides, alcohol DOES do way more damage than weed...hands DOWN
I think its quite hilarious that weed was deemed illegal just because the spanish were coming into the southwest US and they thought that it might steer them away from immagrating.
Now we have a plant that grows naturally that millions and millions of people enjoy to smoke (myself included)and its illegal.
In the year 2000 here are some facts:
435,000 died from tobacco
85,00 died from alchohol
0 died from marijuana
Im glad we let are family and friends die from those two but you cant enjoy a plant.
Drunk guys get voilent.
Drunk girls get horny. BAD COMBO.
Stoners are mellow and would be good for the economy especially the food industry.
I get so sick of hearing people call marijuana the gateway drug. That is like saying 'paintball guns are the gateway weapons to murdering people with an uzi' ....what a lie.
That is a load of HORSE APPLES...
It's crap...why would so many ppl say over and over that marijuana is a good thing? Because it's true or because the internet is full of potheads?
Get a clue. It's the first reason. Meth is another thing, and even stoners will agree that meth is bad. Marijuana is legal in many places, and I bet the crime rate went DOWN when they legalized it.
@B G. - I love the comment "I'm so sick of hearing people call marijuana the gatewaay drug. That is like saying 'paintball guns are the gateway weapons to murdering people with an uzi'". So true. I had smoked for.. oh I don't know.. seven years or so, and never once have I touched meth or any other street drug. Of course I have drank alcohol, but who hasn't? In my opinion, it's all mind and self control. There were many times I could have tried other crap, but I have self-control. I can say 'no' and walk away. To me, marijuana is no different than Valium, other than Valium is harder to get and you have to have a script. (And most of the time you're going to get Diazepam. - The generic form of Valium for those of you who don't know...) If only there were a generic, much cheaper form of chronic.. *sigh*
a lot of people on this site are ...just idiots.. I cant think of a better way to say it.. while it is true that pot is not as harmful as some of the other drugs, it is harmful.. those of you that do not see the other side of drugs need to realize there is another side... there are positives and negatives to all things including drugs... while there may be an upside to marijuana, ie. calming people down, helping them have a good time, the downside is horrible.. i had a friend killed by a pot dealer in 2002, i have seen hundreds of pot related accidents.. i cant tell you how many robberies and thefts occur because of this drug, is it as many as meth, no, but it does happen.. and as long as the people vote and make it illegal it should not be cool that we ignore that and think it is ok to smoke pot..
People who live in Sandy know that the area is notorious for drug dealers and drug labs. They had a fake "home invasion" case last week that ended up being drug related.
However, drugs are problem countywide, not just Sandy. I hate to think that kids in the area may be exposed to them. That's sad.
Utah used to be such a nice place to live and now, as the population grows, we're getting more and more of these types of problems. Sad. Hopefully law enforcement will nail the bad guys and make sure they don't come out of jail for decades.
