SALT LAKE CITY -- The results are in for the 2009 municipal elections. CLICK HERE for results from across the state.
Prop. 1
Although turnout was low, it was enough to give Salt Lake City leaders the money for a new Public Safety Building.
By nearly two to one, voters approved the $125 million bond. In doing so, they also raised their property tax by $75 each year for the average home.
Salt Lake City Mayor Ralph Becker said, "The idea of having to increase taxes on yourself for any reason, regardless of the critical, need is a considerable sacrifice."
A new complex is not expected to open for at least another three years.
School bonds
Voters in the Granite and Davis school districts approved money for school improvements and construction.
Granite voters approved a $256 million bond by nearly 5,000 votes.
And 61 percent of the voters in the Davis School District said yes to a $250 million bond. Both the Granite and Davis district bonds do not require tax hikes.
However, voters in the Duchesne District turned down a $49 million bond. That would have meant an annual $65 tax increase for the average homeowner there.
Mayoral races
In dozens of cities, Utahns selected a mayor and members of their city council.
Local businessman Mike Winder won the West Valley City mayoral seat by a landslide, raking in 76 percent of the vote over Kevin Fayles.
In Herriman, voters booted out Mayor Lynn Crane, who has been in office since the city's 1999 incorporation. Josh Mills will take his place.
Saratoga Springs made history, becoming the first Utah city to elect an African American woman as mayor. Mia Love defeated Jeff Francom to replace the city's outgoing mayor.
Stockton Mayor Dan Rydalch, who recently fired a police officer who gave his son a ticket, lost his job. Rydalch got less than a quarter of the votes.
