Utah Supreme Court hears Warren Jeffs appeal
Defense attorneys for the leader of the FLDS Church, Warren Jeffs, stood before the Utah Supreme Court Tuesday. They hope the justices would reverse Jeffs' 2007 conviction for his role as an accomplice to the rape of a 14-year-old follower.

I don't think Jeffs will ever see the light of day again. If a man has more than one wife he's thought of as strange and it's socially unacceptable. When he starts marrying 13 and 14 year old girls he ends up in a blue jump suit handcuffed in a court room.

I know the good book has changed because of public views, but it's still pushed on followers of LDS members. It's funny how we place cash we take in over what we beleive in. Next we'll say we love all gays as long as they give cash at sunday meetings.

It is my legitamite concern that the financially backed gay mafia will be able to intimiidate and buy off the law makers allowing them to obligate any and all churches, including the Mormons to marry them in the temple.

@jerwall79 - UnderJamz the only thing that would happen is that the LDS church would stop performing marriages period before they started marrying gay couples. They would have their members get civil marriages and then seal them in the temple under a religious-only ordinance, which no government can ever force them to do for anyone.

Not sure what you are saying here??

Any man that has more than one wife is strange and it is socially unacceptable except for some folks here in Utah who think it is OK. Also, if a man marries a 13 or 14 year old girl, he is sick my friend. In the sense of "Right and Wrong", these acts don't require much thought if you were brought up in a decent home environment with morals and manners.

With regard to the story at hand, I think it is interesting how the court has skirted around the polygamy issue. In other words, Jeffs was convicted of rape but at the same time the court has never ruled against polygamy so therefore could you say that polygamy is not illegal in Utah? Just a thought.

Also, you should note that most folks from other states are keeping a careful eye on these hearings because they are not the usual faire except for Utah.

Utah was asked to stop polygamy in order to gain statehood but has it really stopped???

I don't know if Joseph Smith ever intended polygamy to be such an issue as it is. I think it should cause a church member to reflect on human values, as they call them, and decide once and for all if polygamy is really an acceptable practice and a God like value???

@Bob H. - The problem the courts have with sticking a polygamy charge to any of the FLDS is because they marry and divorce then marry another or have "spiritual marriages" that don't fall under the guidelines of the law. So technically these guys are not married to their other wives and as such would need to be prosecuted for adultery.

However since many of their "wives" are underage and they do consummate the so called marriage this falls under the statutory rape laws.

So...they needed to multiply ! but, after that. With the "New Testament" in force !it was supoused to STOP that polygamy practice.but again the LDS just took the parts in the Bible that where CONVENIENT FOR THEM!(Joseph Smith) they just wanted to keep indulging in it! and so the rest of the FLDS. Why were the parents of the girl who was allegedly raped not prosecuted. If anyone was guilty of being an accomplice it was them. Any parent who would allow their 14 year old daughter to marry an adult needs their head examined.

Jeffs actually did nothing wrong or illegal. The conviction is completely biased and should be reversed even if you DON'T take into account the religious freedom aspect. So if I tell people to get married and they do, then I'm a rapist? What garbage. People will sheepishly defend anything that government does, even if it is a totally unjust and nonsensical conviction. At the very least, he should get a FAIR trial somewhere nowhere near utah, because utahns are out to "get" the polygamists (out of blatant hypocrisy because most utahns have ancestors who were polygamists.

@T shane - T shane: Yes in fact, Jeffs did do several illegal acts. Not only did he counsel an underage CHILD to marry but he also performed the marriage ceremony between that child and the pedophile who was her cousin knowing full well it would be "consumated" (child rape)before she reached the age of legal consent. He's no different than any other sex offender at the point of the mountain. The only people being "nonsensical" are those poor souls who are deluded so much as to think Jeffs is/was some kind of prophet.

Furthermore, In 1879 the U.S. Supreme court ruled that "polygamy" is not a protected practice in regards to freedom of religion.

I'm not pro flds or pro polygamy or pro anything involved with this story. I'm simply reminding people who are so disgusted by the beliefs of the FLDS to simply look at where they started. These beliefs were not created by the FLDS they were the works of Joseph Smith. The FLDS are doing nothing different than what happened during the times of Brigham Young, John Taylor and Wilford Woodruff. The FLDS, just like Lorenzo Snow [5th President of the LDS Church], didn't give up polygamy after Woodruff issued his manifesto in 1890. I don't understand why people in the LDS Church are so disgusted by polygamy and yet are so blind to their own heritage.

Joseph Smith Jr. [The Prophet, Seer and Revelator] married to:
Fanny Alger in 1833 [age 16]
Sarah Ann Whitney in 1842 [age 17]
Flora Ann Woodworth in 1833 [age 16]
Helen Mar Kimball in 1843 [age 14]
Nancy Winchester in 1843 [age 14]

Yes, the FLDS are sick! But who taught them their beliefs?
